How Catbreed works
Methodology and editorial standards
A transparent explanation of how the quiz, breed guides, and care articles are assembled—and where their limits begin.
Last reviewed September 26, 2026Compatibility scores are comparisons, not diagnoses
The quiz maps answers about energy, sociability, curiosity, adaptability, household activity, other animals, grooming tolerance, and special-care comfort to the same dimensions used in our breed profiles. Each breed receives a relative fit score. Scores help sort the sixteen included breeds; they are not probabilities, clinical assessments, genetic predictions, or evidence that a particular cat will behave a certain way.
How breed profiles are developed
We begin with breed histories, standards, and temperament descriptions from established registries such as the Cat Fanciers’ Association and The International Cat Association. We then translate those broad descriptions into household questions: How much interactive play is realistic? What equipment fits the cat’s body? Which grooming tasks recur? How does the individual respond to visitors, handling, solitude, and other animals?
Registry descriptions are not treated as guarantees. When histories include folklore or disputed origin stories, our guides say so. When allergy claims are common but variable, our guides explain that no breed is truly hypoallergenic and recommend spending time with the individual cat.
Health and care information
Health-related articles use primary or authoritative veterinary and animal-welfare references and link to further reading. We avoid diagnosing, prescribing, or presenting general timing guidance as a rule for every cat. Articles include a clear reminder to follow the veterinarian who has examined the animal.
Editorial review and updates
Core guides carry a review date. We revisit pages when a cited organization updates guidance, a factual concern is reported, or a feature changes what the page promises. Corrections are made directly on the affected page. We do not change dates merely to make old content look new.
Advertising and affiliate separation
Ads appear only on substantial editorial pages, never inside quiz questions, navigation-only screens, community voting controls, or checkout flows. Affiliate links are labeled, and product categories are selected for practical fit rather than commission. Advertising, affiliate relationships, and report purchases do not influence quiz calculations or editorial conclusions.
Use the individual cat as the final evidence
A shelter, foster home, rescue, or responsible breeder can describe behavior they have actually observed. Ask about affection, recovery after stress, play, litter habits, medical history, handling, and prior experience with children or animals. Those observations should outweigh a generalized breed score.
