Less loose hair, not less care
Low-Shedding Cat Breeds
Low shedding does not mean hypoallergenic or effortless. Cats produce allergens through skin and saliva, and unusual coats can require specialized bathing, skin, or temperature care. These breeds may leave less loose hair while creating different responsibilities.

Compare the shortlist
These scores describe broad breed tendencies. They help reveal tradeoffs, but they cannot predict one cat’s personality, health, or comfort in your home.
How we chose
A shortlist built around daily life
We begin with the practical need behind this guide, then compare the social style, activity, vocal behavior, grooming, and household fit described in established breed standards. We translate those tendencies into questions an owner can use when meeting an actual cat.
We deliberately include tradeoffs because there is no universally best breed. Age, health, early experience, environment, and individual temperament can matter more than pedigree. An adult shelter cat with a known history may offer a clearer match than a kitten chosen by appearance.
Questions worth asking
Before you choose
Which cat breed sheds the least?
Hairless and curly-coated breeds often release less visible hair, but individuals vary. Less shedding can come with more skin, ear, bathing, or temperature care.
Does low shedding mean hypoallergenic?
No. Major cat allergens are associated with saliva and skin secretions, not just loose hair. Test your response to the individual cat and consult an allergist for significant symptoms.
How can I reduce cat hair at home?
Use regular coat-appropriate grooming, washable throws, a HEPA vacuum or filter, and consistent cleaning. Sudden or patchy hair loss should be evaluated by a veterinarian.
